Hot days and the drama of Premier League

 Sun, 24 May 2026 16:04 UTC

It’s hot, sunny, and I’m melting. The sofa is a good place to be right now at the hottest time of the day. I should really be outside somewhere, doing something, being somewhere, doing something active or laying in the shade somewhere, under a tree or something. I should be enjoying this unusual May weather.

My energy levels are low. No, not on account of the weather; some like it hot. I like it hot. I think it’s a combination of exhaustion and the hot sun.

4pm marks the start of the final games of the season in the Premier League. I don’t support any team in particular, although I was glued to the screen this past week, willing Arsenal to be crowned the champions. It’s been a while for them. Normally, I wouldn’t care who is relegated, but this season is different. It’s two big names in the game: Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham.

It’s been like high-drama unfolding. The air is thick with tension, hanging over my head like a fog. I live in close proximity to armies of fans for both sides (London is not that big a place) and so, over the past week, any talk of the drama surrounding the fates of both these teams is difficult to avoid.

I’m not really rooting for either of them. I simply cannot. The outcome is already known: one of them will fall and the other… they will live to fight another season in the most popular football league in the world.

I admit, I’m watching the Tottenham vs Everton match right now, but I am also keeping a very close eye on what’s going on with West Ham vs Leeds. Both are playing for their very survival and when survival is at stake, it’s game on. It makes for excellent play, the very best entertainment and — not to mention — the climax to all the drama.

All the world’s a stage today if you’re a football fan who follows the Premier League.
