Self-hosting thoughts

Jellyfin is done, and my automation Python scripts have been migrated from my VPS. What’s next? I guess nothing, for now. I have no real need for Pi-hole or Nextcloud or anything Fediverse.

I’ve been thinking about what else can be added to my home server, and honestly, I don’t “need” much else for now. Casting my mind back to why I had a VPS to begin with, it was to play with Python, as well as a place to run Fediverse software like Mastodon, Hubzilla and Friendica. When I lost interest in the Fediverse, the VPS was just a play pen for me to mess around on, running the odd bot on there to scrape data and such. Oh, and Jellyfin. Those other personal projects are pretty much dead to me now; I’ve moved on.

Over the past week, I’ve had that temptation to self-host e-mail again. I’ve done it before with great success but it was a painful process to (a) get setup, and (b) keep it stable. I’m happy with where my e-mail is currently hosted — let my hosting company take care of the server side, I can’t be bothered with all that any more.

I think there is always the initial excitement that comes along with running a home server for the first time ever. Weirdly enough, I’ve never done it before. And when it happens, I think there is the desire to throw everything one can possibly throw on there just as a bit of fun. Maybe after having had my fun initially on my VPS, that feeling has waned this time around. And that’s a good thing I think. I don’t want to end up with a spaghetti mishmash of random software and services which I don’t really need. I feel good about not succumbing to that nerdy temptation.
