That week 46

 Sat, 15 Nov 2025 10:09 UTC

It’s been one of those weeks. I’m feeling the winter blues already and have this nagging pull to hibernate. I feel exhausted and have no motivation to do anything. And… it’s been raining for two days straight, making the short November days even shorter as a result of the dark and gloomy sky.

At least the weekend is here.

Since all my issues with Gedit, I’ve made the conscious effort to use Nano more. I do miss the on-page spell checker though, but hey! Sometimes, we cannot have it all.

Text editors

Over the past week, I’ve been looking at the state of other text editors. I’ve tried to use VS Code for the first time ever and that went sour very quickly. VS Code itself is nice and solid but it needs to be dressed up like a Christmas tree with plugins to get it working the way I want. For example, just to get syntax highlighting, I need a plugin. Spell checking? Another plugin. And so it goes. And let’s not talk about all that telemetry which needs to be disabled. VS Code is a big “no thanks” from me.

I took another look at Zettlr as well. It is almost perfect but it cannot integrate with my system spell checker. It is supposed to — the docs say it should — but it does not work for me. I am very edge case in terms of my spelling requirements, so this is immediately a deal breaker.

Joplin? The same.

There is a pattern here: these are all Electron-based software and it would seem that they all have an issue integrating with system language files. Hmm!

Anyway, I am eagerly awaiting the release of LibreOffice’s upcoming Markdown support scheduled for next year some time.

Enough about that.

Ubuntu server

Whilst the home server is running well (as expected), I am so tempted to scrap Ubuntu and use Debian. Working in Linux Mint as my main desktop, I had pushed to the far reaches at the back of my mind the Ubuntu Snap shenanigans. It never once crossed my mind until this week. I have since removed and held snapd yet cannot silence the nagging voice in my head that I must ditch Ubuntu for something better, or rather, something a little less insane.

Sounds like a good 30-minute weekend project to me.
