Jellyfin is coming home

 Wed, 22 Oct 2025 18:54 UTC

With my VPS expiring in December, I needed to find a new home for my Jellyfin server. I no longer need my VPS — the price to renew it has doubled and I can no longer justify the cost. It has to go. I used to run all sorts on there but have slowly scaled back to doing things a little more smarter and yes, slower! I’m no longer in a rush, it would seem.

I could spin up another VPS with another provider at a quarter of the price of my current one, albeit with much less storage, but honestly? I don’t really need a server running 24/7 just for Jellyfin; it’s a little bit overkill I think.

This past weekend, I installed Jellyfin server on my laptop, loaded some movies and series and it has been running smoothly, streaming away to the bigger screen of the TV. Come bed time, I simply shut the laptop down or sleep it and resume the next day.

I was also seriously considering buying a Raspberry Pi for use as a low-power 24/7 home server setup but what else would I have put on there besides Jellyfin? Nothing at all. That then became another potential cost (£100+) that I could not justify.

I’ve brought Jellyfin home and so far, it looks like it is here to stay. I might move it to an older laptop rather than keep it on my daily one but maybe some other time.
